Short Circuit
By Focus on the Family
September 2003
Recently, Focus
on the Family had the chance
to sit down with Short Circuit and
discuss some issues that really hit home.
It's been a long summer for, Orlando
Hollinger, Dominic McNally and Elijah Damon, but between touring and just releasing their sophomore album, these are guys
who aren't about to lose their focus by being in the spotlight. With passionate hearts for God and spiritual wisdom well beyond
their years, they continue to encourage others to walk in the footsteps of Jesus.
As
I walked into the room to start the interview, I could sense a comfortable atmosphere, like I'd known these guys for years
and we were just getting together for a short visit, one that's long overdue.
Jeans,
T-shirts and some running shoes, (McNally decided to throw a hat in) is the attire this morning.
Hollinger
sits leaned over in his chair with a foot over his lap, listening eagerly to my questions.
Damon is relaxed, feet on the floor, twiddling his thumbs
from time to time.
McNally
found a spot on the comfy leather couch that's in front of the window, but for now, the blinds are closed to hide the parking
lot behind it.
Now, finding my seat, we shake hands and get to business.
-Rick

Colorado Springs, CO
Rick: Now a lot has gone on since we last sat down and talked. Tell me a little
about some of the things you have been doing?
Orlando: We've
been promoting our new album and we just got finished with the Summer Jam Fest in August, which has been really great, but
really busy too.
Rick: Do you guys plan to take some time off once you get back to Nashville?
Orlando: Yeah, we're going to take a couple of months off to visit our families and take some
time to really just dig deeper into the Word.
Dominic:
Over the course of the past year, we've been pretty busy and even though we all take our daily alone time with God very seriously,
we felt it was time to just sort of back out of the spotlight for awhile and really look at our hearts and do some in depth
reflecting on our own relationships with the Lord.
Elijah:
Yeah, and we would really appreciate it, if everyone kept us in their prayers, that we'd have an amazing time with the Lord
and really grow from this experience.
Rick: Ah, you can count on it. Tell me some more about what the Lord has been
doing in your life recently and what you've been able to see Him doing through you?
Orlando:
It's been pretty amazing to see God working and the opportunities He has given us to be able to take His Word to people who
otherwise wouldn't have the chance to experience His love and that has really humbled me and has kept me on my knees, knowing
that it's only because of God I am able to accomplish this mission.
Elijah:
I think we all feel really blessed by this opportunity to serve God and it puts things into perspective. We want to remind
people that He can use you wherever you are, whether it be in a classroom, on Capital Hill or even just by being a kind neighbor,
if you are obedient and submit yourself to His will, there is nothing that He can't do through you. And we tell people too,
that it's not about us, or, the music you hear, because once the lights are turned off and the show is over the only thing
that is left at the end of the night is Jesus and the impact He has made.
Dominic:
The love and grace the Lord demonstrates in my life each and every day is what sustains me and gives me hope in my most desperate
circumstances. Despite the fact that we as believers still fall short of the glory of God, the good news is, God knows that
we are needy and that our greatest source of love is need-love, because we are so helpless and incapable of doing anything
for ourselves. We sometimes wonder off, but He is always there to receive us with grace, as long as we humble ourselves and
admit we've made a mistake and return to Him with our whole heart. There is no sin too great, that His blood isn't able to
wash it away and cleanse us and purify us.
Elijah:
It's easy sometimes and I speak from experience, to form habits that take us further from God without realizing it, and I
can't stress enough the importance to really search your heart out and ask God to reveal to you the things that don't belong
there and to truly surrender those things to Him. And I know how that sounds, I use to think, "Yeah, yeah, I've completely
given my life to the Lord, 100%," but it's easier said than done, and I neglected to really examine my heart and acknowledge
the things that I was struggling with, until I really felt like God was saying to me, "You've got to give this and this to
Me, if you really want Me to use you." Satan will use anything to try and take us further from God. Whether it's sin that's
haunting you, or, not being able to forgive someone for the hurt and pain they've caused. All sort of things, if we're not
careful, will put stumbling blocks in our path. God wants us to be able to forgive, just like He forgave us. He's paid the
price for our sin, just lay it at the foot of the cross and move on. When you're holding onto all those things, you're not
glorifying God and testifying to His grace.
Rick: What is some advice you can give to teens and adults also on being pure
and waiting on God?
Elijah: Well, God makes it very clear that we are to be pure, both in mind and body and He
says in, 1 Timothy 4:12, "Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers
in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity." So no matter what age you are, God wants us all to set
an example to non-believers and the believers as well. Purity is something that
should be embraced and cherished. Often, so many people are being swept up in today's culture of focusing on ourselves, rather
than the needs of others. It's Satan's way of having us focus on what we want instead of putting
God's Will first and striving to be more like Christ and being a servant out of humility. Dating and having boyfriends
and girlfriends prematurely, can easily sidetrack us, even if the only thing we're doing is going out to a movie
and holding hands, we're wasting our energy and time on building that one relationship, often excluding our other relationships,
just to break up with that person to find that our relationships with family members and God, as well as friends
are falling apart. And when you aren't dating someone in particular, you're always looking for Mr. Right or
Miss, as the case maybe, and you're missing what's really important. I'm not saying that guys and girls shouldn't interact,
but the Bible says, "Do not rebuke an older man, but exhort him as a father, younger
men as brothers, older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, with all purity." Interaction is exactly what is needed
in order to become successful husbands and wives one day, but only if we're treating one another as brothers and sisters in
Christ and are learning and growing in our relationship with the Lord on account of spending time together. When you're with
a group of friends and no one is trying to impress anyone, you see each other for who the other really is, without the façade,
which tends to happen a lot when dating. And it's the guys with the huge responsibility to be the initiators and pursuers
and the protectors, but in today's society anything goes, the roles have been reversed and girls are just as aggressive as
the guys, which can be intimidating, and it's sending mixed signals. God created us separately and our natures are what draw
the line emotionally between our sexes.
Dominic:
As much as we try and call abstinence to peoples attention, our focus is also to reach out to people who have already given
themselves completely to someone, like myself. We want people to know there is hope and forgiveness in Jesus Christ. God wants us to have a second chance and though it is free for us, it wasnt free at all.
He allowed His son to go through pain and suffering and even death, for us. All we have to do is receive that gift.
Rick:
It really is a gift, because we're all sinners. The Bible says, "We all have fallen short of the glory of God."
Dominic:
Yeah, were we get our names from actually!
Rick:
Really? Cool! But, now, a lot of people are wondering, "If you don't date, then what do you do?"
Orlando: Dig into the Word, learn and grow in your relationship with the Lord
while you have that opportuinty. That's the other gift. Singlehood, once it's gone, it's gone. A lot of people try clinging
to that still, when they're married and it just doesn't work. Embrace the time you have as a single is all I can say. It's...it's
a time for gaining wisdom and understanding and becoming equipped. If God's calling for you is marriage,
the best thing you can be doing for your future mate is becoming the person you were designed to be in Christ. Whatever
God's plans for you, you've got to become equipped before He can give you that responsibility. But, most importantly, don't
worry about it! Rely on God to give you the desires of your heart. He put them there, He knows all about them, so it's cool!
Rick: It's awesome to see you guys stepping out there. It
really gives people the enthusiasm to make a stand for Jesus Christ; I mean everyone in the Christian music industry!
Orlando: Oh, definitely, definitely. People are really searching for truth, and,
Jesus is just pouring out His love. It's wonderful to see more and more people reach out to Him, and to be able to be part
of that!
Elijah: It was just the other day, I was waiting down by my apartment for a friend to show
up and, this guy just walks up to me and said, "Tell me about Jesus." And I was just kind of surprised, you know, for this
opportunity. Here's this guy who didn't even know me, but there was an emptiness a longing for something more and that devastation
just pushed him to walk up and ask someone off the street for something bigger than he was, which was great though, and I
thanked him later, because a lot of people, even when they are that desperate, wouldn't have had the courage to have done
that.
Rick: Wow! That's awesome! Something similar happened to me
once. I was at work, a guy in the elevator just said, "What's this "Jesus thing" you're always talking about?"
When we live our faith out day by day people in the work place, people we know, they, they see that and they start to wonder
and ask questions.
Orlando: Yeah, you go to be ready for them! (Laughs)
Rick: (Laughs) Right!
Elijah: Ummmm??
(Everyone is laughing)
Rick:
So what other
sort of things do you guys like doing, I mean, do you ever just have fun?
Orlando: To be sure. We go skinny dipping at the pond behind my house. No, no,
I'm just kidding, I'm just kidding! (everyone laughs)
Oh,
man, Dom got me addicted to tennis and now like I'll call him up and I'm like, "Let's go play tennis," and he'll be like,
"Um, not right now." (laughs) But serious man, it's too much fun to be had!
Rick: Do you think you'll go pro? (laughs)
Orlando: Um, I don't know about that, but, uh, who knows. (laughs)
Rick: What about you guys?
Elijah: I've got this pinball table that I've managed to some how to squeeze into my tiny
little apartment and I love playing it for some reason.
Dominic: Yeah, I go over to his house and beat him
Elijah: He does actually. (laughs)
Dominic: No, no, no
Rick: IS that after you beat Orlando on the tennis court?
Dominic: Oh, yeah!
Rick: You downsize the playing area a little bit! (laughs)
Dominic: Yeah, yeah
Rick: What are your ambitions for the next ten years?
Orlando: We're just taking it one step at a time and moving in the direction the Lord leads us and right now this is it, but
if you were to ask me if I thought this is what we'd still be doing in five, ten years, I don't know. As long as this is my
calling, I'm going to put everything I've got into it and if the Lord chooses another path, whether it's being a plumber or
whatever, then I'll be just as exuberant about it as I am about preforming and sharing Him on a platform.
Dominic: Wherever we go in the next ten years, my ambition is to let Jesus be the Lord of
my life and continue spreading His amazing love.

Article from
Release Magazine
June 2002
I'm sure by now you've heard of, Short Circuit and if you haven't,
crawl out from under your rock!
The three gorgeous guys who form Short Circuit, from whom you'd expect
the average mainstream sex, drugs and rock'n'roll story from, are actually three extreme Jesus freaks with strong beliefs
in abstinence that they're not afraid to talk about!
The band released their debut album, Uplift in the
Fall of last year. Since then they haven't had much time to slow down, the ride has been picking up quickly, currently on
tour and already nominated for two Dove Awards, including song of the year, but that is not to say that they've forgotten
their mission, to bring to the world the hope and love of Jesus Christ.
The group shows their maturity through their lyrics and talks
they've given at churches and Youth Fests across the country.
Orlando, 23 and a native of Hull England, lead vocalist and
guitarist, when asked where he gets the ideas for his songs, he replied, "I can never write usless God first inspires
me. When He wants me to write a song, He really lays the words on my heart." He carries with him a green, hand-sized
notebook to jot down lines now and then, whether sitting in his room or on a bus!
Elijah (bass) tends to be the funny guy (maybe it's because he's
the youngest) who when he isn't acting crazy or playing his Fender Strat (sometimes both at the same time) you can be sure
to find him with his head in the 'fridge!
Dominic (drums) is never very far behind on any of the escapades
that go on, though in his "off time" you can find him playing the drums or in a hidding place, reading one of his favorite
books!
These guys are far from being finished, but right now they
say, they're not thinking about the future, just the work God's given them to do for now!

Defining Style
by Maggie Richards
December 2001
As far as similarities go, Short Circuit can be compared to bands
such as Sonicflood or Matchbox Twenty, but it wouldn't be fair to assume the band hasn't created their own style and flair.
If you're looking for the perfect gift, look no further. The lyrics
and passion of Uplift, expresses maturity and a deep love for Jesus. As you listen to the CD, there is a longing
for Christ that will humble even the most distant heart to draw near to the One who gave it all!

Here's how it went!"

Word Music Magazine
January 2003
Short Circuit released their debut album, Uplift in the Fall of
2001, but their popularity has grown quickly with audiences of all age groups!
Uplift, upon it's release sold at a suprising rate, earning a platinum
record, even shocking the record company!
Last Spring the band toured with, Rebecca St. James on the European,
Wait For Me Tour. Tickets selling out at every concert!
Also in the past year, Short Circuit has been traveling,
giving concerts and speaking at churches and Youth Fests across the country.
Don't be fooled by their mainstream sound, because even with
their continuously increasing fame, the band hasn't lost their focus on the One it's all about!
Word Music Magazine: Tell me, what's it like to go from not being recognized
to having people ask for your autograph everywhere you go?
Elijah: It's really weird, because it's like, "I'm not the famous one, it's
Jesus!"
WMM: Is that how you all feel?
Orlando and Dominic: Definitely.
WMM: How long have you known each other?
Elijah: They've known each other since they were like five, but I actually
met them about six years ago, when I went on a mission trip to England.
WMM: What gave you guys the idea to start a band?
Dominic: God.
Elijah: Music is what brought us together and after awhile we felt like
God was putting it on our hearts to pursue music as a ministry, so we got started playing at local spots, till one night,
Mark, our producer was there and he heard us and it just went from there.
WMM: How did the three of you spend New Year's Eve?
Orlando: We did a concert at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs.
Dominic: Yeah, which was really awesome!
WMM: What does the New Year have in store for you, once you're finished
with The FFH Tour?
Elijah: We'll be in the studio finishing up our second album, which is scheduled
to be coming out this Summer, then we'll be doing some more traveling and promoting.
WMM: What are you planning to do on the new album?
Elijah: We really felt led to do more of a worship album with this one,
cause worship is such a key element in our relationship with God. It's so important to realize just how wonderful God is and
how powerful and merciful and just be in awe of Him!
WMM: Have you decided on a name for it yet?
Elijah: We're calling it, The Worship Project! Because that should really
be our mission, to worship God.
WMM: You guys have been really busy since your first album came out, traveling
and on tour. Last year you toured with Rebecca St. James on the Wait For Me Tour in Europe. What was that like?
Orlando: It was like going home, one of our first concerts was in London.
It was awesome to get to go home right away!
Eljiah: Rebecca, her and Rachel both have such an incredible love for God
and they really live what you see on stage and in the spotlight! And it's awesome to be on tour, especially for the first
time with someone who makes it so easy to experience God!
Dominic: You could really feel the Spirit moving in the audience and for
me, that's when I really get on fire to worship!
Orlando: The revival that's happening in America, is happening all
over the world and those concerts were just proof of that, that people are searching for the truth. They're tired of
the lies they've been sold and they want something that's real, something that's eternal and Jesus is the only One who
can offer that.
WMM: Wow! What sort of influence are you hoping to contribute to that hunger?
Orlando: Just a pure love for God! We want to encourage people to fully
live their lives for Jesus.
WMM: And what are your beliefs on the issue of purity?
Orlando: Purity is very important to us. It's something that we talk about
at our concerts and encourage teens and adults alike, to wait for the person God has specially created them for. To not be
hasty in ripping into the present too soon, 'cause I've had friends who have gone ahead and had sex and later come to me saying
they wished they haden't, they wish they would have waited. It's like buying a present for someone. You wouldn't let all your
friends use it first and then give it away all broken and beat up, but instead, you wrap it carefully and make sure it's kept safe.
We need to guard our hearts that way, guard our purity. Not just physically, but emotionally as well!
WMM: What are some of the things that have kept you stong and keep you from
making that mistake?
Orlando: A desire to please, God. He says that sex is for a husband
and wife and I don't want to hurt Him by holding His Word in disregard.
Elijah: Waiting is such an act of love and I want my future
wife to know how special she is to me! Even if I don't get married, I don't want to have to live with that guilt and
regret.
WMM: I have to say, I love the CD and there's one song on it called Charity.
Tell me some more about it!
Orlando: I wrote the song for my good friend, Charity who just turned nine
in November. She was diagnosed with cancer a couple years ago and it's been really hard on her family, really hard for me,
but Charity, she reminds me of the child that Jesus said we must all be like in order to enter the kingdom of heaven. She
just has such an extraordinary love for Jesus, which is so encouraging to me and I wanted her to know how much I appreciate
that. She has taught me a lot.
WMM: What is a lesson that God is teaching each of you now?
Dominic: To really just stay focused on Jesus and to rely on His stength.
Sometimes I focus on helping other people so much, that I start to neglect my own relationship with Him.
Elijah: God is just teaching me to really be patient and wait
for His perfect timing!
Orlando: To keep my mouth shut, for a number of reasons! (laughs)
